Welcome to the 12^th conference on Rewriting Techniques and Applications, which was held from May 22^nd to 24^th 2001 in the Educatorium building of Utrecht University. Along with this conference, several workshops could be attended. More information about the workshops can be found in the Programme Section.

RTA is the major forum for the presentation of research on all aspects of rewriting. Previous RTA meetings were held in Dijon (1985), Bordeaux (1987), Chapel Hill (1989), Como (1991), Montreal (1993), Kaiserslautern (1995), Rutgers (1996), Sitges (1997), Tsukuba (1998), Trento (1999), and Norwich (2000). The proceedings were published by Springer-Verlag in their Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. Further information about RTA can be found here.
